So, what do you think your chances of getting hit by a bus are? Mine are 100%. I wasn’t physically hit by a bus, but my poor car was this morning. I mean, seriously??? How does this crap happen to me? Luckily, my husband was driving behind me and saw the entire episode. I mean, can you imagine walking in the door and your spouse tells you that they were hit by a bus? You’d totally think they were lying, and bust their chops until they came clean about what really happened.
The street that leads out of our neighborhood to the main road is a complete debacle. In the mornings, it is a super busy two lane road. There is a tram station there as well, and the commuters like to park on this road, thus taking up one of the two lanes. Now, you have morning drivers trying to get in and out of the neighborhood. It’s like running the gauntlet each morning. Unfortunately for me, today was not successful. I got stuck between a parked car and 3/4 of a lane on the opposite side. I knew I was in trouble, but there wasn’t much I could do. I put on my park assist, pulled over as far as I could, and waited. Well, around the corner comes a school bus. There obviously wasn’t enough room for the bus to get through, but this bus driver was determined. I saw her inching her way through, and all of a sudden my car parking system went ballistic and I heard this crunch. I pulled the car all the way over, got out of the car, and hmmm….the bus driver drove off! You’ve got to be kidding me, right? I looked at my husband, who I think was in disbelief, and he just said to get back in my car and drive the kids to school. How does this kind of stuff happen?!?!
Later in the morning I went to the police station in my commune. They were very helpful, and assisted me in making my police report. I finished up, and then he handed me a breathalyzer. I knew this was coming because in Belgium you have to take a breathalyzer if you are involved in an accident. I had to take one when I was in a major accident earlier this year. The first time I had no idea what to do, but the police officer acted as if I should know what to do. I had to let him know that I had never done this before, believe it or not. This time, I knew what to do. The police officer took some pictures of the car, and told me that he’d be in contact.
I don’t know, I guess we’ll see what happens. I’m curious if the bus driver that hit and run me will be reprimanded. I wonder if we’ll get reimbursed for the damages. I knew the name of the bus company, what the bus driver looked like, where the bus was going, and what time it was. Hopefully the police’s detective work will right this wrong. I’ll keep you all updated. In the mean time…I’m driving down the middle of the street so that no one can try to get around me!
